What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy – commonly known as PRP – is a cosmetic treatment that utilizes the patient’s own blood cells to help heal, repair, and regenerate skin in a targeted area.

PRP can also be used as an effective treatment for hair thinning or hair loss. It’s often used to combat baldness or alopecia, helping stimulate new hair follicles and natural hair regrowth.

Conditions that PRP can be used to treat include:

  • Acne scars
  • Tear troughs/under-eye circles
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sagging skin and volume loss
  • Burn scars
  • Sun damage
  • Stretch marks
  • Hair thinning or loss

PRP therapy involves blood cells, so you may have also heard it referred to as the ‘vampire treatment’. Once you see the results, you’ll realize it’s nothing to be scared of!

How Does PRP Work?

The secret to platelet-rich plasma is the growth factors and platelets naturally produced by your body and found in your blood. These cells help to repair tissue and stimulate new collagen cell growth.

Think of it as a treatment that harnesses the body’s own ability to regenerate itself, which is great because there’s practically no risk of your body having an adverse reaction to the treatment.

PRP injections are prepared by drawing a small amount of blood from your arm and running the blood through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. The platelets are then injected directly into your skin with the aim of improving the appearance of wrinkles, acne scarring, surgical scarring, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone.

Platelets can also be used to stimulate hair growth, which is why PRP hair restoration procedures are quickly growing in popularity.

Treatment Options

In most cases, we recommend 3-5 PRP treatments. Typically the first three treatments will be scheduled within 4-6 weeks of each other and then 8-12 weeks afterwards.

This gives your body enough time to complete its natural healing process following the procedure.

It generally takes a minimum of 30 days (one full skin cell cycle) to see texture and clarity improvements and between 3 and 6 months for collagen and elastin remodelling to be noticeable.

Many of our clients also opt for PRP as part of a combination treatment with microneedling and laser procedures. We offer package deals on multiple sessions, which is a great option if you are planning to have several PRP treatments.

Preparation For Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

Allow at least 1 hour for PRP sessions. The treatment involves roughly 20 minutes to draw your blood and process the platelets, 15 minutes to apply a numbing cream to the area being treated, and another 10 to 30 minutes for the injection procedure.

Remember to follow these pre-care instructions:

  • Before treatment, you need to stay away from Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, and fish oils for seven days before your treatment. Avoid ASA (Aspirin) 2 weeks before treatment. (Talk with your doctor if you are undergoing ASA Therapy.)
  • Discontinue inflammatory drugs or antihistamines seven days before treatment. These nullify the treatment results, and your body’s inflammatory and histamine reactions are required post-procedure.
  • Do not undergo electrolysis, laser hair removal, depilatory creams, and waxing seven days before your treatment.
  • Avoid topical retinoids like tretinoin and retinoic acid (Retin-A, Refissa, or Renova) seven days before your procedure. A 3-month waiting time is requested after you stop using Accutane.
  • Notify the office if Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) has even been found in your body. You may require prophylactic therapy.

Post-Care & Recovery

PRP injections are considered a safe and trusted procedure. There is some social downtime due to the swelling and slight bruising that may occur, but recovery is relatively quick and painless. PRP therapy’s most common side effects are redness, mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness in and around the treated area.

It’s best to avoid washing or rubbing the area for the rest of the day following your treatment. On the following day, you can wash gently as normal, and then over the coming days, return to your normal skincare routine.

We will provide and talk you through detailed post-care instructions as part of your initial consultation and again on the day of the treatment.

FAQs

What can PRP treat?

PRP treatment is a popular choice for people looking to improve their signs of aging such as sun-damaged skin, pigmentation, and scarring. It can also be used as part of tissue repair procedures and hair restoration recovery.

How many PRP sessions do I require?

Our average client will typically book 3-5 sessions of PRP treatment to achieve their desired results; however, you may require fewer or more treatments depending on your personal situation.

When will I see the results from PRP injections?

Skin texture and changes can usually be seen within a week of treatment.

However, typically results will build for 30-90 days post-treatment.

How long will the results last?

This varies depending on lifestyle, diet, sun exposure, and products used at home.

Typically, results last anywhere from 3-12 months. We suggest returning every three months for maintenance treatments to maximise the results and getting monthly facials between services.

Is PRP safe?

PRP injections are considered a safe and trusted procedure because it utilizes the body’s own recognizable blood cells. The most common risk factor is a little bit of social downtime due to the swelling and slight bruising that may occur.
