What Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

Platelet-rich fibrin – commonly known as PRF – is an all-natural solution used to rejuvenate skin and improve signs of aging, such as under-eye hollows, deflated cheeks, and the scalp for hair restoration.

It is very similar to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment; however, newer research shows that PRF has an even higher concentration of platelets, white-blood cells, stem cells, and growth factors than PRP. Higher concentrations mean more healing factors are present within PRF, which can lead to better overall results.

This is a great option for anyone looking for a non-invasive skin or hair treatment with minimal downtime and results that last.

Conditions that PRF can be used to treat include:

  • Acne scars
  • Tear troughs/under-eye circles
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sagging skin and volume loss
  • Burn scars
  • Sun damage
  • Stretch marks
  • Hair thinning or loss

How Does PRF Work?

Platelet-rich fibrin is drawn from the patient’s own blood in exactly the same manner as PRP. The blood cells are placed inside a centrifuge designed to separate PRF from other blood components. Injections containing the PRF are then administered directly into the targeted area on the patient’s face or body.

The total procedure takes about one hour, after which you may resume normal activities. There is some social downtime due to the swelling and slight bruising that may occur. It is important not to massage or otherwise manipulate the area while it is swollen. The average patient tends to notice an improvement after 1-2 weeks.

Platelet-rich fibrin is often used in combination with hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers, and microneedling treatments.

Treatment Options

You should allow at least one hour for PRF sessions. The treatment involves roughly 20 minutes to draw your blood and process the platelets, 15 minutes to apply a numbing cream to the area being treated, and another 10 to 30 minutes for the injection procedure.

In most cases, we recommend 3-5 PRF treatments spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart for best results. This gives your body enough time to complete its natural healing process following the procedure.

Many of our clients also opt for PRF as part of a combination treatment alongside hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers, and microneedling procedures.

Preparation for Microneedling

Remember to follow these pre-care instructions:

  • Before treatment, you need to stay away from Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, and fish oils for seven days before your treatment. Avoid ASA (Aspirin) two weeks before treatment (talk with your doctor if you are undergoing ASA therapy)
  • Discontinue inflammatory drugs or antihistamines seven days before treatment. These nullify the treatment results, and your body’s inflammatory and histamine reactions are required post-procedure.
  • Do not undergo electrolysis, laser hair removal, depilatory creams, and waxing seven days before your treatment.
  • Avoid topical retinoids like tretinoin and retinoic acid (Retin-A, Refissa, or Renova) seven days before your procedure. A 3-month waiting time is requested after you stop using Accutane.
  • Notify the office if Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) has even been found in your body. You may require prophylactic therapy.

Post-Care & Recovery

Recovery from a PRF treatment is relatively quick and painless. The most common side effects of PRF therapy are redness, mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness in and around the treated area.

It’s best to avoid washing or rubbing the area for the rest of the day following your treatment. On the following day, you can wash gently as normal, and then over the coming days, return to your normal skincare routine.

We will provide and talk you through detailed post-care instructions as part of your initial consultation and again on the day of the treatment.

FAQs

What can PRF treat?

Platelet-rich fibrin can be used to treat a range of aesthetic concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles, acne and surgical scarring, and even hair loss. Many patients choose PRF because it can also be a great way to stimulate collagen production in a desired area.

How many PRF sessions do I require?

We typically recommend a course of 3-4 PRF treatments to achieve long-lasting results, though this will depend on the issue being treated and how well your body responds to the treatment. We will be able to give you a better estimation during your free consultation.

When will I see the results from PRF?

Skin texture and changes can usually be seen within a week of treatment.

However, typically results will build over one to three months of treatment.

Is PRF safe?

Yes, PRF is considered a very safe procedure, given that the principal material used is the patient’s blood. That means there’s practically no chance their body will reject the PRF injections.
