What Is RF Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatment combines benefits to deliver an incredibly effective, non-invasive skin treatment. As a form of collagen induction therapy, it is often used on the face and neck, though practically anywhere on the body can be treated. It’s also effective for a wide range of skin types and tones, which isn’t the case with many other laser devices and cosmetic treatments.

While microneedling treatment is growing more and more popular, it’s important to note that not all clinics have the same tools at their disposal. At HerSpace MedSpa, we use the gold standard of RF microneedling devices: the Lutronic Genius®.

The Genius offers minimal downtime and can be used to treat a wide range of skin issues, including:

How Does It Work?

The Lutronic Genius® is a state-of-the-art system that uses gold-plated needles and advanced technology to both prick the skin and targets radiofrequency energy in precise areas. Pinpoint coagulation zones are achieved while maintaining maximum patient comfort through real-time impedance monitoring. As the needles penetrate the skin, bipolar RF energy is emitted at the same time.

The targeted trauma sparks your body’s natural healing response, effectively telling it to stimulate collagen production and elastin production. New collagen and elastin fibers will replace old, damaged cells and, as you recover over the coming weeks and months, you’ll notice that your skin becomes smoother and more toned and the appearance of wrinkles or scars will be diminished.

Preparation For RF Microneedling Treatment

6-12 MONTHS BEFORE TREATMENT: 

• Stop the use of Accutane 

2-4 WEEKS BEFORE TREATMENT 

• Talk to us about starting a hydroquinone regiment 2-4 weeks before your treatment series if you are prone to hyperpigmentation

1-2 WEEKS BEFORE TREATMENT: 

• Buy Skinceuticals Gentle Cleanser 
• Stop use of all Retinols/ Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, “anti-aging” products
• Stop use of all glycolic or salicylic acid treatments 
• Avoid sun exposure 2 weeks prior to your treatment
• Stop waxing, abrasive scrubs, and microdermabrasion treatments 
• Call us at 732-747-7935 if you have a history of cold sores as you will need a prescription for Valtrex to begin the day before

DAY OF TREATMENT: 

• Eat a meal 1-2 hours before your treatment. Don’t drink any caffeine for 4 hours before your treatment
• Arrive with no make-up 
• Stay hydrated! Drinking plenty of water before and after your treatment can improve your healing time
• No Motrin/Ibuprofen or medications that can enhance bruising on the day of the procedure

Post-Care & Recovery

It’s crucial that you follow a strict post-care routine following your RF microneedling treatment to achieve the best possible results and avoid adverse side effects. We will talk you through this and give you a detailed list of instructions as part of your consultation.

Redness and inflammation are typical 24-72 hours post-procedure. Patients note some needle points for 24-48 hours post-procedure. It is rare, but possible to bruise. Most of the downtime and recovery process is ‘cosmetic’ and pain-free.

For optimal results, you must use the products recommended to you. Gentle products (no retinols, AHAs/BHAs) are recommended for 3-10 days post-procedure.

FAQs

How many treatments will I need?

The Genius is meant to be done in a series of 3-5 with maintenance sessions as needed after that (once a year). Most patients will see improvement 3-6 months after the first procedure is performed.

How long is the treatment and how frequently do I need to come? 

A single session for a full face and neck treatment can be completed in just 1 hour. Patients numb 1 hour prior to the procedure. Sessions are spaced 4-6 weeks apart. 

When can I wear makeup after treatment? 

Makeup is permitted 24-48 hours after treatment as long as the skin is intact. Make sure that your makeup brushes and sponges are thoroughly cleaned before application, and be gentle with removal. 

Do I have to stay out of the sun? 

SPF 50 should be applied every 2 hours daily regardless of treatment. You should avoid direct sun exposure for 24 hours post-procedure.
