Is Microneedling Permanent?

  • 5 min read

Guide:

Microneedling triggers the body’s natural healing response, stimulating collagen production, releasing growth factors, and rejuvenating the skin’s surface. Using fine needles to create thousands of micro-injuries, this simple yet widely loved treatment makes the skin appear younger, healthier, and brighter.

Is Microneedling Permanent?

For some people, a series of a few microneedling sessions can treat their skin concerns permanently, but we usually recommend returning every six months for treatments to maintain results. Most patients need 3-5 initial sessions to see results, then return twice a year for a maintenance session. Mild concerns such as pores or dry skin may only need one session to be effective.

When targeting specific conditions such as acne scars, having several microneedling treatments can permanently reduce or eliminate their appearance. If your treatment is to improve your skin’s overall appearance, such as tone, texture, and pigmentation, you should continue maintenance treatments every six months to keep optimum results.

If your skin concerns include any of the following, we recommend visiting an aesthetic office for maintenance microneedling treatments to maintain your results:

  • Wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Enlarged pores
  • Rough or dull skin

How Do I Maintain Microneedling Results?

How long your microneedling results last depends on a few factors, including how well you continue to care for your skin after treatment, your skin type, and the severity of your skin concerns.

Follow A Daily Skincare Routine Between Your Treatments.

No matter how well you keep up with your maintenance medical spa treatments, such as microneedling, if you are not taking care of your skin throughout the time between those treatments, your results won’t maintain as well in the long term.

If you need assistance with an effective medical-grade skincare routine customized just for you, one of our providers would be happy to help you create the perfect skin care plan.

Even if you already have an effective skin care regimen, adding an extra hydrating product to your routine can help keep your skin well-nourished after your microneedling treatment. Since microneedling helps products absorb more effectively, this is the perfect time to use medical-grade anti-aging products such as Retin-A, hyaluronic acid, and tretinoin.

Avoid The Sun

Make sure you’re minimizing sun exposure when possible but if you are exposed, reapply sunscreen every two hours and wear UV-protective clothing.

Reduce Risks Of Infections During Healing

You must care for the treated areas as they heal to achieve the most effective long-term results. Wash your hands before touching your face, and use antibiotic creams as instructed.

Avoid strenuous activities that cause sweating, which opens your pores and increases the risk of infection. Stay away from swimming pools, saunas, and strenuous gym workouts for at least 72 hours after your microneedling treatment.

Don’t wear makeup for the first 48 hours after your microneedling treatment. Your skin needs time to heal, and makeup can clog your pores and cause breakouts during healing.

When Will I See My Results After Microneedling?

Initial redness and swelling after your treatment are normal and should fade within 1-3 days and heal completely after a week or two. However, since microneedling stimulates collagen production that helps create new, healthy skin over time, it may take up to two months to see the final results.

What Results Can I Expect From Microneedling?

Once collagen production has gradually developed new, smooth, tightened, glowing skin, you should see improvements in the skin’s overall appearance and texture. Your aesthetic provider will work with you to develop a microneedling plan dedicated to treating your specific concerns. Your microneedling treatment goal is to improve or completely diminish your problem areas.

We most commonly use microneedling to address the following skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Loose skin
  • Skin tone
  • Stretch marks
  • Scars
  • Dark under-eye circles
  • Crow’s feet
  • Neck or chest lines

We often recommend incorporating platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or radiofrequency energy (RF) in microneedling treatments for more effective and dramatic results. While microneedling alone can be very effective for many people’s concerns, some patients consider the treatment more “worth it” when including PRP or RF to boost results.

PRP enhances collagen and elastin production in deeper layers of the skin and can boost microneedling results exceptionally when targeting concerns like pigmentation and acne scarring.

Microneedling RF is an anti-aging treatment to tone, tighten, and smooth out wrinkly, loose, sagging skin. We recommend this microneedling treatment to patients with severe concerns seeking more dramatic results.

How Do I Prepare For A Microneedling Treatment For Best Results?

How well you prepare your skin for microneedling treatment will impact the result and longevity. When you schedule your appointment with us, we’ll share some recommendations for best practices for prepping your skin for treatment day, which include:

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!

Exfoliate thoroughly several times in the weeks leading up to your microneedling treatment, helping improve your results by shedding dead skin away. Avoid exfoliating the night before your microneedling treatment.

Avoid Certain Acne Medications

We’ll ask you which medications you are currently taking ahead of time because certain acne medications can cause healing complications. We may recommend discontinuing certain types for several weeks to months before your microneedling treatment.

Avoid Topical Retinoids And Antibiotics

We recommend discontinuing abrasive products such as topical retinoids and antibiotics for at least a week before your treatment.

Having healthy, clear, and radiant skin will positively impact your confidence.
